2 Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2 (NIV)
Hosea, from the book of Hosea, was told by God to marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her. Hosea did so and many other things that God had commanded of him so began his journey as a prophet spreading God’s Word and His love.
So Saturday I read the book of Jonah which is also short (a mere 4 chapters). In the first chapter God told Jonah to go to and prophesize against the city of Nineveh because it had become sinful and wicked. So Jonah ran in the opposite direction and took a boat to Tarshish almost immediately a storm swept upon the boat and its crew who struggled to keep the boat afloat. In a short time it was determined that Jonah was the reason the ocean had become so violent. That and Jonah said it was his fault and explained that he was running away from God which is funny in itself. I mean really who can run away from God? Silly Jonah. So long story short the crew of the boat throws Jonah into the sea and almost immediately the waves and storm subside. Then out of nowhere a giant fish appears and swallows Jonah whole and for the next 3 days and 3 nights Jonah lives inside of the giant fish. Then he prays to God a really awesome prayer and then God commands the fish to vomit Jonah onto dry land…eewwwww nasty.
Then Jonah went to Nineveh and began to prophesize that God was about to destroy the people of the city for their sins and wickedness. When the king heard this he toke off his royal robes and covered himself with sackcloth and then sat down in the dust.
7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”
10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. Jonah 3:7-10
My point here is simple. You can be like Hosea and just do as God says and everything will be hunky-dory. Or you can do as Jonah did run away from God take a cruise get thrown overboard then get swallowed by a giant fish then pray and be vomited out of the fish, still eewwww, do what God asked you to do in the first place for the people of Nineveh then the people change from their evil ways and repent and everyone is saved.
So here is what I have learned so far:
- God loves us so much that if we repent from our evil and wicked ways then God will forgive us.
- You can’t hide from God. No really you can’t because God sees everything and Jonah is proof of that.
- God can make fish puke up people…on command!
- I should be like Hosea and just listen to God
- I identify with Jonah. I think we are related.
God bless all that read this with His love, light, grace, mercy, and wisdom. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Revelation 22:21 (KJV)
