Happy New Year! I cannot believe that it is 2020 already! A new year is always a time of mixed emotions for me. Anything can happen! This could be the year that you get your dream job or promotion or retire. This could be the year that you fall in love, get engaged, or married. This could be the year that you get pregnant, have a baby, or a first grand or great-grandchild. This could be the year that all of your dreams come true! And along the way, there will be birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, celebrations, and many new memories made. The sky is the limit!
But because anything can happen, there is a flip side to the coin. Jobs can end with unexpected lay-offs or firings. Relationships can end through breakups or divorce. Pregnancies can end with miscarriages or a baby born with unexpected medical needs. This could be the year that your heart gets broken and your dreams die a little. Along the way there may be illnesses, death, financial hardships, and painful memories that are made.
But with all of this uncertainty, we must never give up hope. These days, hope can seem like it is in short supply. It can seem at times that we are wandering in a desert, exiled from our hopes, dreams, and expectations for how we wish life would be. The prophet Jeremiah once wrote these words to the people of Israel: “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile’”(Jeremiah 29:11-14).
The Lord has plans for you – BIG plans. He will provide your every need, and despite what 2020 throws at you, you will prosper and not be harmed. This doesn’t mean that life won’t sometimes be hard, but ultimately you will not be destroyed by it. He gives us hope and a future that is with Him. He only asks for one thing: seek Him with all of your heart. If you do nothing else in this new year, do this one thing. Seek the Lord. Let Him grow in you and through you, and 2020 and the rest of the years to come are full of hope and light!
